Guiyang, known as the “City of Forests,” is the capital city of Guizhou Province. Nestled in the mountains, it boasts a pleasant climate and lush greenery, making it a unique destination in China.
For those with some free time, here are some recommended spots to explore:
Qianling Mountain Park: This is a must-visit place. As you enter the park, you’ll be greeted by playful macaques. You can feed them (though it’s important to follow park guidelines for safety). Further up, Hongfu Temple offers a peaceful setting for those interested in Buddhism to offer prayers. The temple’s architecture and serene atmosphere provide a great escape from the hustle and bustle.
Jiaxiu Pavilion: Standing elegantly on the Nanming River, Jiaxiu Pavilion is a symbol of Guiyang’s rich history and culture. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it has witnessed centuries of change. Walking around the pavilion, you can soak in the historical ambiance and enjoy the beautiful views of the river and the city.
When it comes to food, Guiyang is a paradise for food lovers. Minsheng Road is a great place to start your culinary journey. Here are some must-try dishes:
Sour Soup Fish: A signature dish of Guizhou, the sour soup is made from a special fermented ingredient, giving it a unique tangy flavor. The fresh fish cooked in the soup is tender and delicious.

Day 2: Guiyang- Anshun
Yunfeng Tunpu – Anshun

In the morning, depart from Guiyang and drive for about 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Yunfeng Tunpu. Yunfeng Tunpu was a garrison site established by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Here, a large number of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties and traditional culture have been well-preserved. Stepping into Tunpu, it feels like you’ve traveled back 600 years. Strolling along the flagstone paths, you’ll see ancient Xilou (wooden buildings with overhanging upper stories) and Hua Diao (flower-shaped watchtowers) neatly distributed on both sides of the streets. These buildings have a unique style, blending the gracefulness of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River with the ruggedness of northern architecture, bearing witness to the vicissitudes of history. The residents in Tunpu still retain the clothing, language, and living habits of the Ming Dynasty. The women wear blue long gowns with wide sleeves and large collars, white headscarves, and embroidered cloth shoes, speaking the unique Tunpu dialect. It’s as if you’re in a living history museum. Tourists can communicate with the residents here to gain an in-depth understanding of their lifestyle and cultural traditions.
After the visit, drive for about 30 minutes to the urban area of Anshun and check into a hotel to recharge for the next day’s journey.
Day 3: Anshun
Dragon Palace – Huangguoshu Waterfall

In the morning, depart from Anshun and drive for about 30 minutes to the Dragon Palace Scenic Area. The Dragon Palace is renowned for its spectacular karst cave landscapes and rich karst landforms, earning it the reputation of “The Best Karst in the World, All in the Dragon Palace.”
Upon entering the scenic area, tourists need to take a boat tour of the Dragon Palace Karst Cave. Illuminated by lights, the stalactites shimmer with colorful lights, making people marvel at the extraordinary craftsmanship of nature. In addition to the karst cave landscapes, the Dragon Palace also has attractions such as the Longmen Waterfall and Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), each of which is captivating.
Then, proceed to the Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area (about a 45-minute drive). First, visit the Doupotang Waterfall. With a width of 105 meters at the top, the water rushes down rapidly, making a thunderous sound. It is a major wonder among the Huangguoshu Waterfall cluster. Standing in front of the waterfall, feeling the spray brought by the waterfall and listening to the deafening sound of the water, you can almost sense the power of nature. After about an hour of sightseeing, head to the Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall.
The Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in Asia, and you can admire its magnificent view from six different angles. Among them, the Water Curtain Cave is a must-visit spot. Tourists can pass through the cave behind the waterfall and experience the water flow up close, as if being in a water curtain, enjoying a unique thrill and surprise.
Day 4: Anshun--Xingyi
Huangguoshu Waterfall – Malinghe Grand Canyon

In the morning, go to the Tianxing Bridge Scenic Area for sightseeing. The Aquatic Stone Forest is a typical representative of karst landforms, where the stone forest and water blend harmoniously, creating a unique landscape. Tourists can wander through the stone forest, admiring the stones of various shapes and the crystal-clear streams. The entire tour takes about 3 hours, allowing tourists to fully appreciate the wonders and beauty of nature.
Depart from Huangguoshu and drive for about 3 hours to the Malinghe Grand Canyon.
Upon arrival, enter the scenic area from the Xiaoqingshan entrance and exit. Walking along the plank road, you can see attractions such as the Huanglong Waterfall and the Sea Lion Hall. The Huanglong Waterfall is majestic, with water rushing down from a great height, forming a white water curtain. Among them, the Ten Thousand Horses Galloping Viewing Platform is one of the best spots to admire the waterfalls. Here, you can see the spectacular sight of over 70 waterfalls pouring down. The waterfalls rush down from the cliffs like ten thousand horses galloping, creating a grand and awe-inspiring scene. If you have limited physical strength or are short on time, you can choose to take the elevator up and down the mountain (the elevator fee is extra).
After the visit, go to the urban area of Xingyi and check into a hotel to rest.
Day 5: Xingyi
Malinghe Grand Canyon – Wanfenglin

In the morning, after arriving at Wanfenglin, first taste local specialties such as Wanfenglin Egg Fried Rice and Shuabatou (a local snack). Wanfenglin Egg Fried Rice is one of the favorites among tourists due to its unique taste and aroma. The rice grains are distinct, the eggs are golden and tender, and when paired with various vegetables and seasonings, it tastes delicious.
Take a sightseeing bus to enjoy the magnificent landscape composed of tens of thousands of conical peaks. Along the way, you can also visit traditional villages such as Nagui Village. Nagui Village is a settlement of the Buyi ethnic group, where the traditional architecture and lifestyle of the Buyi people have been preserved. Tourists can enter the homes of the villagers, communicate with them, learn about the culture and customs of the Buyi people, and feel the tranquility and beauty of local folk customs and pastoral life. The sightseeing time is about 3 – 4 hours.
After the visit, check into a guesthouse near Wanfenglin to experience the tranquility and coziness of the pastoral scenery.
Day 6: Xingyi--Guiyang

In the morning, take a stroll around Wanfenglin to enjoy the pastoral beauty and then depart for Qingyan Ancient Town (about a 2-hour drive).
Qingyan Ancient Town is one of the four famous ancient towns in Guizhou. It was first built in the Ming Dynasty. Here, a large number of ancient buildings and flagstone paths from the Ming and Qing dynasties have been preserved. Walking among them, it feels like you’ve traveled through time and space back to ancient times. In addition, Qingyan Ancient Town is also a paradise for food lovers. Qingyan Marinated Pig’s Trotters have a bright red color, a rich marinated flavor, and tender meat. Rice Tofu has a smooth texture and, when paired with special chili sauce and seasonings, tastes sour and spicy, leaving a lingering aftertaste.
After free activities in Qingyan Ancient Town and tasting local cuisine, return to Guiyang (about a 1-hour drive). Conclude the pleasant 6-day journey to southwestern Guizhou, and embark on the return trip with full memories and wonderful experiences.
